2011 junior of the year: jemma stafford
There are few better platforms for making a name for yourself as a future star of the hairdressing industry than being named Junior of the Year at HJ's British Hairdressing Business Awards.
Jemma Stafford, the 2011 Junior of the Year explains what made her stand out from other assistants.
Why did you enter the British Hairdressing Business Awards?
From word go I wanted to set myself a goal that seemed difficult but entirely achievable. The British Hairdressing Business Awards seemed like the perfect platform to test myself and also to start getting myself 'out there' in the industry at an early stage in my career.
Did you put your own entry together?
Absolutely! I did alot of planning based on one piece of advice given to me by my boss, Alan, ''Be creative and concise.'' Using that as my basis, I came up with the magazine layout idea and put together my own shoot with my own models, photographer, Make up artist and stylist that I sourced online.
How long have you been a junior?
I started my career when the salon opened, in May 2009, and have since completed my NVQ2 training and have almost completed my in-house training, making it just under three years.
What makes a great junior?
- Passion for learning
- A desire to progress, and determination to see everything (especially your training!) through to the end!
- Always try and be better than you were the day before!
What do you think makes you stand out from other juniors?
I have clear goals, I adore my job and I invest a massive amount of time into my career. I want to be the best I can be at all times! Dedication is an absolute must and I am devoted to my career and my industry.
What does winning this award mean to you? What do you hope it will lead to?
Winning this award has been the most incredible thing to have ever happened to me! It's given me the confidence to carry on taking risks, try new things, continue learning and, most importantly, not to be afraid to go out there and do my best!
It's the most amazing opportunity I could have asked for, and is my stepping stone to a brighter career in the best industry in the world!
Describe yourself in three words...
