The long and short of it? the mullet's back. Lindsey Wixson mullet hairstyleThe long and short of it? The mullet’s made a comeback – as seen at important shows including Louis Vuitton and Marc Jacobs, as well as on model of the moment, Edie Campbell, who switched preppy glossy lengths for a stark, striking crop. Choppy, aggressive cuts in inky shades of darkest brunette were the surprise hit of the season, with bold and blunt fringes also adding edge to tough-girl looks – and an easier way to tap into the trend. Model Lindsey Wixson, left, makes it work for the real world with an updated version of this classic cut - but will this style send clients running for the hills or see them embracing the update? We asked Kim Rance of  Brooks + Brooks in London for her verdict... "The return of the mullet is enough to send shivers down the spine of most people. It was always deemed a fashion taboo, but there’s something about it that keeps it coming back. Everything makes a comeback eventually, and the current trend is for the noughties, which was the decade when we last saw these shorter layers and longer lengths combined. "I’ve been sporting a mullet style myself this year, keeping the layers long with a heavy base in the back but taking my boho fringe right back to the ears in a soft 1970s sort of way. I’ve been researching the 1970s veil cut recently too, which is a sexier take on the mullet – I’m a fan! "Lindsey’s mullet here is cute and scruffy. You could almost imagine her as a little woodland fairy. When cutting this style think whimsical and cool, rather than 1980s hillbilly. The 2013/14 mullet doesn’t have to mean 4" long layers and no sides. Think about opening out the face, exposing the cheek bones and keeping soft, beachy lengths."
