Salon International 2013 - Sassoon

Surreal headgear, gothic Victoriana, David Bowie and 1970s youth culture: it was all present at Sassoon Academy's inspiring Salon International live show, where Mark Hayes led the team in a remarkable display of creativity and talent. Hundreds of eager hairdressers gathered to learn tips and gain ideas from the show, which kicked off with a welcome from Mark. He spoke of his excitement at returning to Salon International to share Sassoon's latest collection: The Dandies. The show was divided between live demonstrations and catwalk shows, giving a glimpse into the techniques used to create various looks, plus the inspirations behind them. These influences were wide-ranging; one strand of The Dandies collection, named Jockey Club, paid homage to Savile Row with brilliant shine and slicked back looks, bringing barbering techniques to women's hairdressing in order to create a sharp, androgynous feel. He explained that the inspiration was the suedeheads of 1972: a young offshoot group from the skinhead culture whose style was influenced by glam rock. His was just one of the looks to receive a spontaneous round of applause from the audience, along with a dazzling blonde bob featuring navy peek-through colour on the fringe. The show culminated in a vibrant catwalk extravaganza, with models showing off all the key looks strutting their stuff on the stage, before finally the Sassoon team took their well-deserved bows.
