The buzz cut: this season's must-have style

And what exactly is everyone talking about? Their hairstyles of course. Rocking the 'buzz' cut, the girls unique look has earned them them supermodel status in just one season. We caught up with British Hairdresser of the Year Nominees, Gary Hooker & Michael Young and Francesco Group Hairdressing Director, Anya Dellicompagni, to get their tips on how to make this daring style work for your clients. ‘We love that we’re seeing less feminine hair on the catwalk. It’s a style statement and makes a refreshing change from seeing countless models with long hair on every catwalk. It’s certainly a bold look and not one that we would advise jumping into, why not start the transition by trying out a shorter pixie crop before taking the plunge. Ensure that you have the edges of the fringe extra short along with the edges of your hairline; you can soften this look by teaming it with beige or golden undertones. One thing to remember when going for a buzz cut is that requires more regular maintenance trims, if you’ve got thicker hair you’ll need to have it cut every 3 weeks to keep the shape. Choosing your products is key when working with a such short hair, we would recommend using a clay based product as it will give the hair an on-trend matte finish. Avoid shine-enhancing products as these can make the hair appear greasy. We’ve seen lots of celebrities try this look out recently; it works best on women with petite facial features like Charlize Thereon and Emma Watson.’ Gary Hooker & Michael Young, British Hairdresser of the Year Nominees   ‘It’s great to see models taking a risk, I loved when Charlize Theron shaved her hair off for her role in Mad Max so it’s great to see this look filtering down to the catwalk. Clients tend to shy away from shorter styles as they’re scared that it won’t suit them however I tend to disagree as with slight changes made to the cut, and the way it’s styled you can tailor make a short haircut to suit every individual. Whether that’s a crop or an on trend buzz cut like we’ve seen recently.
