More than 50 L'Oreal ID Artists were recently whisked away to Barcelona for their biannual education sessions, led by mentors Tina Farey from Rush and Paul Dennison from Ken Picton.
Hosted at the Academia L'Oreal in the heart of the Spanish city, the trip saw ID Artists and Colour ID Artists planning for the the
Colour Trophy Regional Tour, where they will be presenting their take on catwalk trends.
After a warm welcome from Darren Oram, L’Oréal Professionnel’s education director and Stuart Chapman, education project development manager, it was straight down to the business of creativity.
Divisional event manager, Alison Williams, provided a brief history of the event and insight in to the 2014 show, with long-time collaborator and choreographer Aicha McKenzie and clothes stylist Graham Cruz also providing their input.
It was then left to mentors Tina and Paul to give an indepth model presentation and live demonstrations to inspire the students for the task at hand.
Second year ID and Colour ID Artists were tasked with producing their interpretations of Tina and Paul's vision while first year students were asked to interpret a high street, salon friendly version of artistic concepts.
Working on mannequin heads, groups then had to present back to Tina and Paul at the end of the day, where they were given a critique of the looks created along with helpful tips and hints on their ideas, concepts and messages.
Natasha Pearson, second year ID Artist and owner of Pearson and Clark Hairdressing in Frinton-on-Sea commented:
Tina and Paul talked us through their concept for the Regional Tour, outlining two key themes; Art and Restraint. There were a number of catwalk references and we were shown Tina and Paul’s moodboards to help guide our thinking during the workshops.
"It was great to hear about all the changes to the Regional Tour format for 2014. As a hairdresser, the idea of communicating with the audience on a more interactive level is really exciting and a huge innovation. The Regional tour promises to be more inspirational than ever before, it’s going to be fantastic.
The ID Artists program was set up by L'Oreal Professionnel in 2003. The two-year mentoring programme covers both colour and cutting and styling and has become one of the most sought-after educational opportunities for young hairdressers, inspiring those with an eye for fashion and unique creative expression.
