Membership Subscription Terms & Conditions

These Terms & Conditions (“Terms”) govern all membership and magazine subscription purchases made through www.hji.co.uk/subscriptions (“the Site”), operated by Hairdressers Journal International part of M Squared Media  Ltd (“we”, “us”, “our”).

By purchasing a subscription or creating an account, you agree to be bound by these Terms.

1. Definitions

  • “Subscriber”, “you”, “your”: The individual purchasing or using a subscription.
  • “Membership”, “Subscription”: Any ongoing or fixed-term access to Hairdressers Journal International content, whether digital, print, or combined.
  • “Silver Membership”: Digital-only access available worldwide.
  • “Gold Membership”: Combined print and digital subscription available within the United Kingdom only.
  • “Direct Debit Subscription”: A subscription paid by direct debit from a UK bank account, which automatically renews.
  • “Annual One-Off Payment”: A fixed-term subscription paid upfront for one year that does not automatically renew.
  • “Digital Content”: Website access, digital magazines, archives, and any electronic content we provide.

2. Subscription Types

2.1 Silver Membership (Digital Only)

Available worldwide. Includes:

  • Digital magazines
  • Access to selected subscriber-only content online 

2.2 Gold Membership (Print & Digital)

Available to UK residents only. Includes:

  • Delivery of print magazines
  • Digital magazine access
  • Access to subscriber-only online content

3. Magazine Frequency and Issue Schedule

Your subscription includes 12 issues per year.

Print and digital issues are published monthly. 

Subscribers will receive their copy at the beginning of each month, except where combined issues apply.

4. Terms & Renewal

  • Direct Debit Subscriptions auto-renew at the end of each billing cycle unless cancelled.
  • Annual One-Off Payment subscriptions do not auto-renew and will end after the 12-month term unless manually renewed.

5. Eligibility

  • Silver Memberships are available worldwide.
  • Gold Memberships and direct debit payments are available only to customers with a UK postal address and a UK bank account.
  • Subscribers must be at least 18 years old.

6. Pricing & Payment

6.1 Pricing

Prices are stated on the Site and include VAT where applicable. We may update prices; changes will apply at renewal for direct debit customers.

6.2 Payment Methods

We accept:

  • Direct debit (UK bank accounts only)
  • Debit/credit cards
  • Any additional payment methods shown at checkout

7. Direct Debit Payments & Guarantee

By setting up a Direct Debit Subscription, you agree to recurring payments until cancelled.

The Direct Debit Guarantee

This Guarantee is offered by all banks and building societies that accept instructions to pay Direct Debits:

  • If there are any changes to the amount, date, or frequency of your Direct Debit, M Squared Media Ltd will notify you 10 working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed. If you request M Squared Media Ltd to collect a payment, confirmation of the amount and date will be given to you at the time of the request.
  • If an error is made in the payment of your Direct Debit, by M Squared Media Ltd or your bank or building society, you are entitled to a full and immediate refund of the amount paid from your bank or building society.
    • If you receive a refund you are not entitled to, you must pay it back when M Squared Media Ltd asks you to.
  • You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by simply contacting your bank or building society. Written confirmation may be required. Please also notify us.

8. Delivery of Print Issues (Gold Membership)

Print magazines are available for UK delivery only.

Delivery Terms

  • Issues are dispatched at the beginning of each month. 
  • Delivery times depend on postal service performance and location.
  • We are not responsible for delays outside our control.
  • Lost or damaged issues must be reported within 30 days of expected delivery.

Change of Address

You must notify us of changes to your delivery address at least 21 days before the next issue is dispatched.

9. Digital Access

Digital access is provided through
You agree to:

  • Keep login details confidential
  • Use digital content for personal, non-commercial purposes
  • Not share or redistribute access
  • Accept that digital access may occasionally be unavailable due to maintenance or updates

10. Cancellation Policy: Within 14 day Cooling-off period

You have a 14-day cooling-off period from the day after purchase.

If you are unhappy with your subscription for any reason you may cancel at any time and receive a refund for any magazines not yet received less a £10.00 administration fee.  

Equally electronic subscriptions can be cancelled and you will be refunded for the term of your outstanding subscription less a £10 administration fee.

If you subscribed as part of a special promotion, including a complimentary gift, you have a cooling off period of 14 days to cancel your subscription, where the free gift will need to be returned in perfect condition, in order to receive a full refund. Otherwise the cancellation will come into effect after the first issue has been received and a refund of the remaining issues, less a £10 administration fee will be issued.

Any membership benefits redeemed with a value or ticket price associated will require a minimum subscription commitment of 12 months.

10.1 Refund Rules

  • If you access digital content during this period, you acknowledge that your cancellation rights may be limited.
  • If print issues have already been dispatched, the value of those issues may be deducted from any refund.

10.2 How to Cancel

You must notify us within the 14-day period by emailing [email protected] . We will process refunds within 14 working days of confirmation.

11. Cancellations: After the Cooling-Off Period

11.1 Direct Debit Subscriptions

  • You may cancel at any time.
  • No refunds are issued for payments already made.
  • Access continues until the end of the paid period.

11.2 Annual One-Off Payments

  • These cannot be cancelled mid-term after the cooling-off period.
  • Access continues until the end of the subscription.

12. Our Right to Suspend or Terminate

We may suspend or terminate access if:

  • You breach these Terms
  • Misuse (e.g., account sharing) is detected
  • Payment failures occur
  • The service is discontinued (reasonable notice will be given)

Refunds will not be issued where termination results from subscriber misconduct.

13. Intellectual Property

All print and digital content is protected by copyright.
You may not copy, reproduce, or distribute any content without written permission.

14. Privacy & Data Protection

We process personal data in accordance with our Subscriber Privacy Notice and UK GDPR.

15. Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law:

  • Our liability is limited to the total subscription fees paid by you.
  • We are not liable for delays, omissions, or disruptions beyond our control.
  • Content is provided for general information only.

Nothing in these terms limits liability for death, personal injury, or fraud.

16. Updates to These Terms

We may amend these Terms from time to time.
Significant changes will be communicated in advance.

17. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by English law, and disputes will be resolved in the courts of England and Wales.
