Last year might have been all about twerking and
Miley's raver buns, but the MTV Video Music Awards 2014 were a much more sedate affair - with plenty of great hair.
Perhaps slightly less adventurous than previous years - well, what could top those nubbins? - this year still saw plenty of fun looks. In keeping with the youthful mood of the event, there were less glossy blow-dries than most red-carpet affairs and more trend-inspired looks.
Braids continue to be
summer's top hair trend, with plenty of interpretations of the look demonstrated - but it wasn't just about plaits, ch
eck out ten of our favourite looks from the red carpet below!

Ariana's high ponytail is becoming something of a trademark, but we still love the 60s mood of the sleek style and the youthfulness of the height.

A high ponytail is tightly braided for a catwalk-inspired look on Victoria Justice; it's all in those skinny, tight lengths that take the look from relaxed weekend look to tough and on-trend.

Solange channels Diana Ross and the days of disco with a mass of fuzzy curls in a striking shape.

Kiesza works her chunky braid into a mohawk silhouette for an edgy red-carpet look with 360-degree appeal.

We're glad to see Kesha looking better - and even happier to see her doing so with rainbow hair. Check out those hands ensuring she looks perfect for her red-carpet pose!

Kelly Rowland beats the heat with a braided headband style - simple, summery and stunning with those earrings and
dress neckline.

Ireland Baldwin jumps on the trend for braids too, working with a knotted, loose style that's been pulled apart for a totally dishevelled style.

Gwen Stefani proves you don't have to be under 21 to rock it on the VMA red carpet. Here she keeps it simple with smooth lengths and a cute little knot tied at the front - we're already copying this one!

Demi Lovato really rocks her undercut. We love the colour on the contrasting lengths of her longer side - this girl really knows how to have fun with her style.

Model Chanel Iman must be boiling in her high-necked leather number, but at least her new short hairstyle will be keeping her cool. She looks fab with this new bob!
