Your gen z clients want these tiktok aesthetic hairstyles
Thanks to social media, and TikTok in particular, there have been a host of trends growing in popularity which are all defined as various 'aesthetics'. These aesthetics have a strong hold over the Gen Z demographic in particular, amassing billions of views across TikTok. But what are the most popular aesthetics, and what do they mean for the professional hair industry?
The Popular Girls
Last year saw the rise of the 'Clean Girl' and 'That Girl' aesthetics, while the 'Vanilla Girl' trend appears to be dominating so far in 2023. There are clear similarities in some of these style movements, which can make staying in-the-know a little time-consuming. While most of 'the girls' don't correspond to a set hairstyle, there are common features associated with each - more on that below.Who are 'The Girls' Shaping TikTok Aesthetics?
The Clean Girl...
...is all about the effortless, model-off-duty look - think fresh out-of-the-shower dewy skin and slicked back hair. She doesn’t let her style dictate her hair colour, but wants something that can be maintained easily. She often accessories with gold jewellery, favours a middle part and glossy hair.
It's worth noting that there is some controversy around the Clean Girl aesthetic though, with many highlighting that slicked back hair and gold hoop earrings have been popular among women of colour for many years - in fact, many were even chastised for the look. TikTok user @simplyysri noted: "There is nothing wrong with a remix and bringing back old trends - maybe just credit the original artists." The use of the word 'clean' in itself suggests that anyone that doesn't neatly fit into the aesthetic, perhaps because of textured hair or blemishes on their skin, is, by default, dirty - which is not the case. Ultimately, the Clean Girl aesthetic is all about minimalism - which is achievable for anyone. https://www.instagram.com/p/Chc4cDdJVIh/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_linkThe Vanilla Girl...
...is soft and warm. Think curtain bangs, round layers and soft, airy volume. Money pieces add a subtle brightness without appearing too chunky - simplicity is key here. However, much like her cousin, the Clean Girl, the Vanilla Girl has also been surrounded by contention. Search Vanilla Girl on TikTok and it reveals an array of white women with blonde hair and near-perfect skin. Vanilla is often associated with whiteness in the beauty industry (think about hair shades and foundation names) which has led some to suggest that this new trend is simply the Clean Girl masquerading as an even less exclusive style. Thinking about the warmth and cosiness often associated with vanilla, HJ wants it to be known that anyone can adopt this trend - think caramel tones and honey hues, and lots of body. https://www.instagram.com/p/CkY7xUzL8vn/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_linkThat Girl...
...has got her life together. She’s thriving, just like her hair; full of volume, without a split end in sight. She’s all about deep conditioning treatments, bond building masks and hair oils.
As hairdressers, you are in a fortunate position to help your clients feel like the best version of themselves. Many clients will see 'That Girl' as being someone other than themselves, however you can show them that with a little TLC, they too can be her. https://www.instagram.com/p/CkrvNU2rYIe/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link While trending TikTok aesthetics can be a fun way to find new style inspiration, be sure to take them with a pinch of salt - and encourage your clients to do the same. Remember that regardless of your clients' hair type, skin colour, or budget, you have the tools and expertise to help them feel like the best version of themselves - whether that fits into a cookie-cutter classification or not.
