The Fellowship for British Hairdressing’s Barber Project headed to the Master Barbers this week, for a masterclass in shaving.
The Barber Project team were introduced to the award-winning barber business in Southport. The day continued with the owners, Dan and Robert Rix, giving them a brief review of the industry over the years. They discussed trends, products and techniques and gave an informative overview and the current state of product retail for the barbering industry.
In fact, the industry is becoming more commercial than ever. Nowadays, more male clients are opting out for facial hair and according to YouGov research 42% of men now wear facial hair and of those 44% are choosing a full beard. With the rise of men maintaining facial hair, it's important that barbers feel as confident handling facial hair as they do a head of hair.
The training session also included a presentation and model demonstration by Dan and Robert. The duo showcased their skills by illustrating how to beard trim, shape and condition on a model with a long beard.
Then the team had the chance to practice the newly learned techniques. Each team did a shave and beard trim, including using the razor to sculpt an outline.
Sarah Morrissey, a team member, comments on how satisfied she is from the training. Despite her previous experience, she believes she’d learned new ways to improve her technique and get a closer shave. Sarah adds: “Now, I feel totally confident and am going to expand our male grooming services in the salon and start promoting wet shaving and beard services. I am also going to train some team members up in the beard services.”
