With winter and low temperatures just around the corner, do not be alarmed if clients come through the salon door to complain about an increase in hair loss. Apparently, the changing seasons can actually be a cause of the amount of hair your client’s shed. Here's what to tell your clients about winter hair shedding...
“During the winter, hair can feel dry, and your clients will notice more hair fall out. This is generally related to the colder season sucking more moisture out of the hair,” says Sally Brooks, Brooks & Brooks. “If you think of the hair in the same way as skin, it makes more sense. In the colder months skin needs more hydration, this is the same with the hair and scalp.” Which is why you should recommend clients to moisturise the scalp with products like oil which will help the natural dryness. “It’s worth advising clients to up their haircare routine during the winter to ensure their hair has the vital nourishment it needs without complicating or overloading the hair,” adds Sally.
But it’s not just the cold air that causes stress to hair in the winter months. “Central heating can really dry the hair out causing dehydration, and as we’re faced with extremely cold weather, clients will tend to dry their hair as fast as possible, meaning the heat is on the hottest temperature,” says Jez Barnett, Founder of Fabriq and INNOluxe. “It’s important for clients to apply styling products before drying their hair, along with using heat protection before using hot tools.”
As well as hair shedding, the winter months can cause unwanted frizz. “As clients experience moisture content changes in the air, the protein bonds within the hair expand and contract,” explains Anabel Kingsley, Brand President and Trichologist at Philip Kingsley. “The best way for clients to prevent winter frizz is to use products that form a barrier between the hair and the atmosphere. The Philip Kingsley Elasti-Styler immediately smooths strands whilst discouraging moisture from entering the hair cuticles.”
How can clients protect their hair during the winter?
Although there is no one-way for your clients to prepare their hair for the effects of the colder season, there are some things you can advise them to do. Services such as intensive hydrating and conditioning treatments, as well as at-home aftercare masks will keep the scalp well moisturised and hydrated. “Weekly mask treatments are great for replenishing strength and hydration into dehydrated hair,” says Jez. “INNOluxe Elixir V3 is a fantastic answer to winter hair problems as it feeds hair with a balance of proteins to do this.”
