What we saw on the hj stage at salon international 2022

The HJ Stage was back and bigger than ever this year at Salon International 2022. From cutting and styling, to hair wrapping and wigs, to recreating collections, here are just some of the amazing hair looks we’ve seen created on stage so far.
Saturday 8 October
Salon owner and Schwarzkopf Professional colour master, Stacey Whyte, was first to take to the stage to showcase two of her favourite looks from her latest collection ‘Resolute’. Stacey created 3D-like high-end, wet-look waves for her first look, followed by a high ponytail made with wire, tape, and texturising spray for her second look. When asked where she gets her inspiration from, Stacey says: “I get inspiration from everywhere. TV, catwalk, architecture, the elements, everything.”

Next up, hair loss specialist and educator Krysia West took to the stage alongside a member of her team, Jenna, to showcase how to apply a wig using just gel and hairspray, as well as how to master a wig wrap. Krysia says her inspiration comes from everything around her. Krysia's advice to stylists applying wigs is not to cut the remaining lace as a straight cut. “Cut the lace slightly zigzag to get a better blend.”

Meanwhile, Simon Tuckwell gave us some sharp cuts, and Andy Smith showed off a little bit of colour, cutting and styling, finished with brand new hair accessories.

Tracey Ann Smith, alongside ASP artistic rebel team members, Mia Rowley, Andrew Gladwell and Amy Goodwin, gave us hair looks with sunflowers, Avant Garde fishtails, and copper breakthroughs. Tracey said: "The brilliant thing about working with this hair is the opportunity to really twist and bend it, and when working on photographs, it can really be brought to life."

Sunday 9 October
BHA Hall of Fame member, Rick Roberts brought out two models with supersize looks that were easily tamed for salon clients. His demo included genius hacks for creating a glass-like shine ponytail. For example, why not use a haberdashery brush with a high-shine serum to get that glossy effect? Or even use the back of a hairbrush to smooth down flyways.

HJ Extensions Competition, Sponsored by Great Lengths
The awards ceremony took place on Sunday 9 October, with the finalists being asked to present their completed and styled entries on the Great Lengths stand, before later moving to the HJ Stage for the winners to be announced. There were two categories to compete in: HJ’s Extensions Specialist of the Year – Classical Look, and HJ’s Extensions Specialist of the Year – Creative Look. The prize on offer was a £1,000 bespoke business support package for each winner, including Great Lengths fundamental hair extension courses, mentorship and business seminars courses, application machines and premium quality aftercare products and accessories. Whilst all entries demonstrated excellent skill, judges Rick Roberts - three times British Hairdressing Awards winner, Joanne Fox - HJ’s Extensions Specialist of the Year 2021, and Darcey Maria - former British Hairdressing Business Awards Junior of the Year, selected Jade Searcy as the winner of the classical look category, and Katie Hemming as the winner of the creative look category.
