Brit awards 2022: the best hair looks The 2022 Brit Awards were glamorous, extravagant and full of surprises when it comes to fashion – and some of the best hair looks we've seen. Celebrity hair stylist, Jay Birmingham worked with TV presenter Alex Scott and model Munroe Bergdorf to get their hair looking fierce and flawless for the all-important red carpet. Jay spilled his secrets with HJ, and he wants to show you how to get your clients red carpet ready every day...

Best Brit Awards Hair Looks 2022

In Jay Birmingham’s Chair... Alex Scott

https://www.instagram.com/p/CZxDqEgA4Tv/ "Alex’s hair was super sleek and straight for a sophisticated and fierce look. To add extra length to Alex’s hair I used the Beauty Works 26 clip-in extensions in the shade ‘natural black’," says Jay. "To help reduce frizz and unwanted texture in Alex’s hair I applied my holy grail product – Color WOW Dream Coat. It glides over the hair and smooths the cuticle to ensure a seamless and glass-like finish once styled. I styled her hair with the Beauty Works Straightening Iron." Jay's Top Tip: When straightening hair for an occasion like this, ensure you don’t pass the hair through the iron too many times. "This can create unwanted lines in the hair and it’s best to gloss over each piece lightly just once or twice. I finished with hairspray to lock it in, and provide epic shine to create that red carpet gleam," he says.

In Jay Birmingham’s Chair... Munroe Bergdorf

https://www.instagram.com/p/CZukSOFLj7k/ "For Munroe’s first appearance at the Brit Awards, we knew we had to go big. And so, we went blonde. It’s a super on-trend colour for this season and worked perfectly for Munroe’s celestial look. For a little extra length throughout the wig, I embedded some Beauty Works clip-in extensions in the shade ‘Calabasas’," says Jay. He added: "We wanted her hair to appear slightly waved but still with some structure. To create this shape, I straightened her hair first before adding in a loose wave. This helps to give the hair more hold and shape before the wave is added in. To create this bend in the hair, I used the Beauty Works Pro Styler Tong. To smooth the wig and rid the hair of any unwanted texture, I used an anti-frizz spray that is lightweight and doesn’t leave any sticky residue on the hair. I misted it lightly over Munroe’s wig before adding a light mist of the hairspray to hold the waves in place." Jay's Top Tip: "To finish this look, I used the JOICO Colourful Glow Beyond Anti-Fade Serum. I love this because it boosts colour vibrancy and adds a gorgeous shine to the hair. Just a little amount worked into my fingers and pulled through the waves brought the look together."

Hairdressers' Favourite Brit Award Hair Looks From The Red Carpet

The ongoing, post-lockdown paradigm of ‘Effortless vs Extravagance’ is showing up everywhere. Fashion Week, award ceremonies, Instagram and in salons everywhere. The desire to dress up and feel intrinsically great about ourselves is so evident yet there’s this minimalist wave of natural hair and beauty that’s not slowing down and the BRIT awards 2022 showcased just that. Georgia Faulkner, marketing director for The Blushes Collective salon, is giving us the rundown of her favourite looks.

Olivia Rodrigo

https://www.instagram.com/p/CZwXcWKqUgB/ "Olivia nailed effortless glamour – she followed the new wave natural trend with a paired back makeup look and beautifully, tousled locks - serving up the effortless everyday hairstyle so many of us are loving right now," says Georgia. "Like that wasn’t enough - her beautiful, mirror dress from Alexander Vauthier’s Spring 2022 collection really brought the sparkle we expect and love to see from a red-carpet event." "These mermaid-like, loose waves, are super on trend this year and are perfect for client’s who are looking for a more effortless hair look. When creating a hair look like this it’s key to ensure the hair looks as healthy as possible prior to styling," adds Sabrina Dijkman, ambassador at ALTERNA Europe.

Maya Jama

https://www.instagram.com/p/CZwWsygAWpB/ "If sleek and sultry was the brief, Maya Jama understood the assignment. Her long, glossy locks gave us a look reminiscent of fashion icon Cher. Eye-catching, but not to steal from her risqué, figure-hugging LBD with cut-outs by Mônot," says Georgia. And look at that shine!

Adele

https://www.instagram.com/p/CZui2broOif/ "No one does old Hollywood glamour like Adele. Over the years, Adele’s iconic, bouncy blow dries remain totally timeless and last night was no different. Dressed in a custom Armani Privé gown, her look was every bit the classic romantic style that we adore from red carpet events," says Georgia. "Once you have parted the hair to one side and blow-dried the hair use large barrelled curling irons to create Adele’s big, yet effortless looking curls. Pin these into the hair and allow them to cool before removing the pins and brushing the hair out for softness and further. Finish by tucking one side of the hair behind the client's ear for that red carpet-worthy look and using some Caviar Anti-Aging Smoothing Anti-Frizz Dry Oil Mist throughout the hair and with a focus on the roots to give the hair mega shine and a sleek finish," explains Joana Neves, editorial director at ALTERNA Europe.

Little Simz

https://www.instagram.com/p/CZwXqv1ICNr/ "Whilst her twists were very simply accessorised, Little Simz’ Gucci suit worn during her performance was the balance of androgyny and extravagance in perfect form. This artist is renowned for her rule-breaking red carpet looks and slick, suit styling," says Georgia.

Vicky McClure

https://www.instagram.com/p/CZwSAjgAj19/ "Vicky McClure’s crop hairstyle is everything we adore from the '90s Diana era - it’s textured, tonal and natural," says Georgia. "It really plays into the simplicity and elegance of her overall look from Azzi & Osta."

Vicky Hope

https://www.instagram.com/p/CZwm1RWouZI/ "Radio presenter, Vicky wore a naturally distressed look incorporating a curly fringe. Fringes worn with their natural movement add volume without having to be too big on top - great for a longer face shape. This could be created using Amika Curl Corps applied throughout and manipulating the curls to create definition using a twist curl technique. When dry, apply a texture spray to create an airy feel," guides Luke Benson, creative ambassador at ALFAPARF Milano.

Holly Humberstone

https://www.instagram.com/p/CZuzqxquOD4/ "I just loved Holly Humberstone's whole look. The textures of the hair and flowing movements all complement the overall look expertly, the braiding is bringing the texture of the lace together and the free-flowing wave is mirroring the flicks of the fringing on the sleeves. With all outfits having statement shapes and textures, the hair looks chosen perfectly complement the cuts of the outfit, not distracting from the stand out elements the look is supposed to have," admires Gunel Kelly, director of Harness & Mane. And that's a wrap! How did these looks compare with last years Brit Awards hair looks? See them all here.
