The cool girl haircut is hot on the agenda for 2023
Hot on the heels of the wolf cut comes another haircut that is all about that effortless, cool look, focusing on layers and shaping around the face. We spoke to Cutting Specialist, Jack Mead to get the lowdown on the ‘cool girl haircut’.
What is the cool girl haircut?
Designed to sit softly and work with clients’ natural hair growth, Jack tells us: “The cool girl haircut is an approach taking inspiration from the 90s, where you keep most of the length and focus on shaping around the face, with long layers that get shorter around the front (but not as short as a shag cut, for example).”
And according to Jack, it’s hot on the agenda for 2023. “This haircut will be popular in 2023 because it’s going back to that effortlessly cool vibe, although it’s very technical and takes great understanding of balance and shape,” he says. “It’s also low maintenance like balayage, so in an economic crisis it means people can go longer in between haircuts and requires very little maintenance with styling so it’s easy for your clients to care for their hair by not using heat.”
What’s more, for clients thinking about slightly changing their hair, it can be tailored to different face shapes. “You can tailor the cool girl haircut to anyone because you are keeping the length. It just depends how long you leave the shape around the face and layers,” Jack says. “Clients with big eyes should go for a shorter fringe, for those with good cheek bones, cut the shape to sit on the cheek bones, and for clients with a round face shape, leave the layers a little longer.”
How to style the cool girl haircut
Similar to a wolf cut and shag cut, the cool girl haircut requires little styling as it’s all about embracing the natural hair. “The best way to style this cut is to use mousse scrunched into towel dried hair, leaving the hair to dry naturally and finishing with dry texture spray,” Jack explains. “If the haircut is right, clients shouldn’t have to do much, but if they’re after a more glam look, add some Velcro rollers to enhance the volume and shine.”
