We asked the experts - these will be the biggest hair trends this year
What trends will clients be referencing for their 2020 hair looks? We caught up with a few experts to hear their predictions...

The Blunt Bob vs The Shag

Kevin Finnell, founding partner of F&M Hairdressing says: “2020 will see strong outlines with blunt bobs, strong fringes styled very close to the nape and undercuts to exaggerate the bluntness. All very wearable and adaptable.” Alternatively, Krysia Eddery, Aveda colour ambassador comments: “We will see an increase of longer layering especially with mid length looks that sit around the collar bone. Reminiscent of the 1970s we can expect to see texture, the classic shag will even fade in and out as we move through the year.”

Colour Contrast

This style can be rocked by any hair type, your client just needs to choose two colours. Kevin says: “Many clients will be in love with a new colour pop technique that will enhance the majority of looks without the major maintenance. In terms of global colour looks, we'll see lots of muted copper golds, cashmere browns, cool charcoals, and pastel blondes becoming popular.” Krysia adds: “Colour throughout 2020 will have an expensive, luxurious feel across the board. Multi-tonal colour palettes will also make an appearance throughout 2020 as we move further away from all over block colours. Different tones will be selected to create a much more dimensional colour throughout the hair, giving the illusion of thicker, healthier hair.”

Curly Highlights

The colourist should also consider the lightener and peroxide choice, as curly hair is more prone breakage due to its structure. It is advisable to recommend a series of treatments to your clients before the colouring service. When lightening the hair, the curl pattern should be mapped on dry hair to determine where the colour needs to fall. The pintura colour method is the perfect technique for adding colour to curls. Curls don't blend they tumble and cascade, so curl mapping is essential to obtain a natural colour. Sectioned the hair and use a freehand painting method, colouring the hair without foils in a way that adds dimension and accentuates curls. This is a brilliant way to add the appearance of volume to the curls.”
