The Beverly Hilton, in Beverly Hills, saw an array of stars descend upon the red carpet for the 80th Golden Globe Awards on 10 January 2023, which honour those at the top of their game in the film and American television industries. From perfectly polished ponies to tousled tresses, HJ caught up with several stylists to find out what the hair industry thought about the styles on display at the Golden Globes...

Jenna Ortega

“The star of the moment, Jenna Ortega looked incredible on the red carpet. Wearing a floor length, ethereal style gown from Gucci, Jenna opted for an effortless wolf cut to complement the look,” explained Simon Hill, Owner of Sesh Hairdressing. “Heavily inspired by the 90’s, this style was all about choppy layers and curtain bangs. The ends of her hair sat perfectly above her collar bone and were flicked out away from her face. This style works best with hair that was washed at least 24 hours prior, to help give grip and texture to work with.” Meanwhile, “Chocolate is the gorgeous undertone I see here,” says Siobhan Haug, salon co-owner at Haug London Haus. “Those bronzed Gucci pleats are a subtle tone-on-tone complement to the warm chocolate nuances within that cool shag haircut. Our in-salon colour portfolio, IGORA Royal by Schwarzkopf Pro, has the most delicious range of chocolate tones on every level, which is perfect for recreating this look. Think coco blondes, velvet brunettes and melted chocolate on a light brown level.” https://www.instagram.com/p/CnQW7qOJqY0/

Amelia Dimoldenberg

Golden Globes red carpet reporter Amelia Dimoldenberg looked ultra-glam, and Barb Mahoney, owner of Leicester’s Do My Hair says: “Amelia is oozing with style. Her sunset copper hair complements her fair complexion, and she sets the look off perfectly with her mermaid waves.” Bridal specialist Sharon Roberts says: "I love how Amelia’s colour palette works from top to toe. I feel like her colourist, hair stylist and fashion stylist must have collaborated to ensure a really cohesive look. The dress and hair are not competing for attention – it’s a winner for me and no doubt will be copied by a lot of brides this year.” https://www.instagram.com/p/CnQLHoKLhaP/

Anya Taylor-Joy

Celebrity Hairdresser Jay Birmingham shared: “Anya Taylor-Joy rocked a strapless satin two-piece with a stunning statement neckless. Parted down the centre, her hair was super long and wispy towards the ends. “Celebrities like Kim K have been wearing this style throughout 2022 and it worked perfectly for Anya on the red carpet.” Jay explained: “One side of her hair was twisted and pulled back behind her ear to give an asymmetric finish to her style, while the other sat beautifully down her front. Extensions are your best friend for styles like this – I recommend the Beautyworks Clip Ins.” https://www.instagram.com/p/CnQstzOOVJk/

Margot Robbie

“Margot Robbie looked absolutely beautiful at last night’s Golden Globes, opting for soft, simple waves to compliment her luxurious Chanel gown. With the gown full of texture and gorgeous light reflections, it was important for Margot to opt for a style that was too over-the-top, to give the overall look balance,” explained Gill Berry, from the JOICO European Design Team. Gill shared, “In order to recreate this style, hair should be prepped with as much hydration as possible – I would recommend the JOICO Moisture Recovery Shampoo, in order to get as many nutrients into the follicles as possible. Next, before blow drying, spray the hair with JOICO Dream K-Pak Liquid Reconstructor, to add protection and also completely transform the overall look – this also adds beautiful shine. Blow dry the hair using a medium barrel brush, with a slight wave throughout. Next, take a medium barrel and tong small 3-4cm sections throughout the hair to give it an effortless touch.” https://www.instagram.com/p/CnQf1ChJccP/

Quinta Brunson

Celebrity Hairstylist Alexander Armand shared how they created the actress’ hair look for the Golden Globes, explaining: “I used Hairstory’s styling products to achieve Quinta’s look, which featured a sleek centre-parting, and a voluminous ponytail. First, I prepped with the Dressed Up Blow-Dry Lotion to blow out Quintas hair, as this product has an amazing control factor that helped achieve total smoothness. I then used the Undressed Hair Texturizing Spray on the ponytail to accentuate and build on the hair’s natural texture. This allowed the finished look to appear sexy, full of texture, and yet seductively soft! Lastly, to complete this winning-look I used the Hairstory Hair Oil to add a glowing shine to the hair." https://www.instagram.com/p/CnQVR3MvbX2/

Selena Gomez

Tracey Ann Smith, Owner of French and Ivi and ASP Global Ambassador, shared: “I love classic, gorgeous hair and with awards season I am always intrigued by the styles the celebrities and their teams choose for such an influential red carpet. “This year, Selena Gomez opted for a classic updo – a high ponytail full of volume and flowing waves. Wearing a plunging gown by Valentino, her chic updo balanced the look perfectly. More relaxed than sleek, Selena’s ponytail was a little loose at the top section, with slight height added towards the crown. The ponytail itself was loosely waved and left to flow, again adding to the real relaxed feel of her overall hairstyle. This is a very low maintenance look and one that can work for every single occasion.” https://www.instagram.com/p/CnQjA7yrJ-L/

Natasha Lyonne

“Serving major attitude, Natasha Lyonne stepped out in style for the Golden Globes,” said Brian Leo McCallum, Owner of ROAR Hair and Beauty Group. “Her hair was the epitome of cool with chunky pieces framing her face at each side and a choppy, textured fringe sitting just above her brows. A mix between a mullet and a bowl cut, this style isn’t for everyone but at ROAR we love it. Tied into a ponytail towards the nape of her neck and lots of detail round her face, this was the perfect style paired with the high neck line on her dress.” https://www.instagram.com/p/CnQrOF3LB3l/
