Breaking Down Sofia Richie's Wedding Hair

Published 11th May 2023 by Josie Jackson

As we head into wedding season, the only nuptial anyone is talking about right now is that of Sofia Richie and Elliot Grainge. From her three bespoke Chanel gowns to an exclusive performance from Good Charlotte, footage of the big day has been cropping up all over social media. Lucky for us, Sofia’s long-time friend and hairstylist, Kathleen Riley, also decided to share some intel, not only breaking down her hairstyle from the ceremony, but from the rehearsal dinner and afterparty, too. Here’s what she had to say...

Sofia Richie's Rehearsal Dinner Hair

Kathleen explained on her TikTok that she used oil and gel to create this look; once she had applied the products, she tied up the hair in sections – which she says is the key to a snatched bun. Then, she rope-braided the hair and twisted it up to create the bun and pinned it in place. The stylist also explained that she lightly pulled on top sections of Sofia’s hair to create slight texture. She also left some small pieces out of the bun, near the star’s ears, as a finishing touch. You can see exactly how she achieves the rope braid here...

Sofia Richie's Wedding Ceremony Hair

Sofia was seen sporting her hair in a low bun for the ceremony, which was finished off with the addition of a floor-length veil. Breaking down the look, Kathleen explained:

  1. Create a clean centre parting.
  2. Then, separate the front sections of hair from the back and tie the back into a low ponytail.
  3. Hairspray a boar bristle brush and brush the front pieces down, and join with the low ponytail, one side at a time.
  4. Create a three-strand braid and secure with a hair elastic.
  5. Twist the braid up into a low bun, and secure with hair grips.

Sofia Richie's Afterparty Hair

For the afterparty, Sofia wore her hair in a simple ponytail, with her stylist writing on social media: “Party pony – probably the only hairstyle that would’ve worked for the amount of dancing and fun that was had.” With a sleek middle parting in the front and volume in the back, Kathleen explained that texture spray and volume powder were used to create the look, rather than extensions. She also shared in the comments of a post that Sofia’s layers helped to add natural volume. When asked how she transformed Sofia’s hair from a tight bun to a ponytail, without leaving any creases, the hairstylist explained that in addition to gel and oil, the only other product she used on the bun was hairspray, as it’s easy to brush out. Plus, both looks featured a similar slick-back parting, so the look didn’t have to be transformed entirely.
